Imo CP Warns Against Abuse of Suspects’ Rights

The Imo State Police Command has warned operatives over the long detention of suspects, saying abuse of the people’s rights will not be tolerated.

The state Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, gave the warning on Sunday during a press statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye.

The police boss warned that the command would no longer tolerate unlawful phone searches, extortion, harassment, and other forms of rights violations, particularly against youths.

“The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Aboki Danjuma, has issued a firm directive warning officers and men of the command against unlawful phone searches, extortion, harassment, and other forms of rights violations, particularly against youths.

“He emphasised that shuttle buses must not be used for patrols anywhere in the state. Complaints of harassment, intimidation, and extortion linked to such practices will be thoroughly investigated, and erring officers sanctioned.

“CP Danjuma further warned against the over-detention of suspects, stressing that the rights of suspects are sacrosanct and must be respected at all times. He noted that any breach of constitutional provisions and global best practices will not be tolerated.

Furthermore, he reiterated the ban on the use of unmarked vehicles by tactical teams for official patrols anywhere in the state, adding that unit heads should ensure compliance.

He warned that any complaints of harassment, intimidation, and extortion linked to such practices will be thoroughly investigated and erring officers will be sanctioned.

Meanwhile, the state police boss directed all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical unit commanders to inform and warn operatives under their commands about the warning, as any official found culpable in any misconduct will face the music, and their commanders will be held responsible.
