A call for submissions of legal essays has been made in honour of his Royal Majesty Late Justice Ambrose Ezeolisa Allagoa, CON, the first Indigenous Chief Judge of the (old) Rivers State.

This call was made by the Nembe Lawyers Forum, in collaboration with the Faculty of Law, Niger Delta University. The call for submission is specifically made to celebrate and honour Late Justice Ambrose Ezeolisa Allagoa for his several contributions to the development of the legal profession. Below reads the call:

His Royal Majesty Late Justice Ambrose Ezeolisa Allagoa, CON, was the first Indigenous Chief Judge of the (old) Rivers State (comprising of present day Bayelsa and Rivers States). Until his demise, he held the prestigious traditional stool of Mingi Xi, Amanyanabo of Nembe Kingdom. The late Justice Allagoa obtained his LLB (Hons) degree from the prestigious Cambridge University, London and was subsequently called to the Bar. After his call to the English Bar, he returned to Nigeria to set up a blossoming and exhilarating legal practice, which earned him admiration and respect globally. His hard work, intellectual capacity, and diligence resulted in his elevation sometime in 1962 to the Bench as a High Court Judge by the then Eastern Nigerian Government and he was subsequently appointed the first indigenous Chief Judge of Old Rivers state in 1976 from where he retired. The late Justice Ambrose Ezeolisa Allagoa was fiercely interested in the delivery of justice. His sense of justice and integrity is exemplified in the well-celebrated judgment he delivered in the famous Amakiri case where he entered judgment in favour of a powerless, injured journalist irrespective of the interest shown by the then Military government of the old Rivers State - his employer. Several years have gone by since the demise of this icon of justice, and in order to celebrate and honour Late Justice Ambrose Ezeolisa Allagoa for his several contributions to the development of the legal profession, the Nembe Lawyers Forum, in collaboration with the Faculty of Law, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island Island, Bayelsa State has decided to publish a collection legal essays dedicated to the life and works of the late Justice AE Allagoa.
