Nigeria has emerged as the most targeted nation in the world for cyberattacks, recording an average of 6,101 weekly incidents per organisation in July 2025 — a staggering 67% increase year-on-year, according to a global threat intelligence report by Check Point Research (CPR).
The attacks, which spanned telecommunications, government, business, and financial services, reflect a troubling surge in both scale and sophistication. CPR noted that Africa as a whole faced the highest average weekly cyberattacks globally, with 3,374 incidents per organisation, up 7% year-on-year. Sectors like telecoms, government, financial services, energy, and utilities were the most targeted.
Lorna Hardie, Regional Director for Africa at Check Point Software Technologies, warned that while Africa’s digital transformation is accelerating, cybersecurity defences are lagging. She urged a prevention-first, AI-driven approach to stay ahead of threats.
Other African nations also recorded significant figures: Angola faced 3,731 attacks (down 43%), Kenya 3,468 (down 25%), while South Africa saw 2,113 attacks, marking a 14% rise.
