Namibia has rolled out an “Ethical Use of Social Media” campaign following a sharp surge in online crimes recorded between 2022 and 2025. Police described the trend as “alarming,” with fraud, defamation, and theft under false pretence topping the list of offences.

Inspector General of Police, Lieutenant General Joseph Shikongo, also flagged other crimes such as threats, extortion, cyberbullying, child exploitation, human trafficking, explicit content sharing, hate speech, and incitement to violence.

Authorities say the campaign is part of a broader crackdown to curb digital crime, stressing that Namibians must use social media responsibly to protect both individuals and society at large.
