French media giant Canal+ has closed the gap by acquiring the remaining 55% stake in MultiChoice Group—the parent company behind Africa’s top pay-TV brands DSTV and GOTV. The $3 billion deal (approx. 55 billion rand) was formally approved by South Africa’s Competition Tribunal on July 23, 2025 after meeting regulatory conditions, including firm commitments to support local content, jobs, and historically disadvantaged stakeholders.

MultiChoice serves over 14.5 million households across 50 African countries, offering top content through DSTV, GOTV, and SuperSport. Under Canal+ leadership, the platform plans to expand to 50–100 million subscribers across the continent. Canal+ has pledged to inject ~26 billion rand over three years toward public-interest initiatives, ranging from local content production to supplier development and job retention guarantees.

This landmark acquisition transforms the African entertainment landscape. Canal+ gains a larger footprint in Nigeria and English-speaking markets, while MultiChoice receives fresh capital for innovation and new content. With DSTV’s high costs and growing streaming competition (e.g. Showmax, Netflix), the partnership aims to blend global ambition with local relevance, potentially bringing better content, pricing structures, and tech upgrades to millions of African households.
