On July 16, 2025, hackers infiltrated a third-party cloud CRM system used by Allianz Life Insurance (North America), accessing personally identifiable information of the majority of its 1.4 million U.S. customers, along with some employees and financial professionals. The breach was confirmed publicly on July 26, and Allianz has since launched an FBI-reported investigation. Although internal systems remained secure, the incident underscores how third-party platforms have become a major vulnerability entry point for cybercriminals.

Cyber incidents surged across the globe in July 2025, particularly affecting sectors like insurance, healthcare, and cloud services. In Africa alone, 17 confirmed data breaches occurred during July (tied to phishing, DDoS attacks, ransomware, and system intrusion incidents) according to cybersecurity analysts.

These rising numbers highlight the urgent need for digital vigilance. While Nigeria saw 119,000 breached accounts in Q1 2025, the uptick in more recent attacks suggests traditional safeguards are no longer enough, especially in fast-growing tech markets.

For digital users and African businesses, the Allianz breach and July cyber wave are warning signs: your weakest link may be your vendor, not your own network. Social engineering attacks, hackers tricking support staff into granting access, are on the rise.
