NOA Pledges Renewed Commitment to Eradicating FGM and Rights Violations in Ekiti
The National Orientation Agency (NOA) in Ekiti State has reaffirmed its commitment to eradicating female genital mutilation (FGM), curbing human rights abuses, and promoting environmental cleanliness across the state.
Speaking during a sensitisation programme held in Ado Ekiti on Monday, the State Director of the NOA, Mrs Kemi Akomolafe, expressed the agency's determination to eliminate FGM and enhance public awareness concerning personal hygiene and human rights.
“NOA remains resolute in its efforts to completely eradicate female genital mutilation, particularly among women and children in Ekiti State. It is imperative that citizens take responsibility for their actions and actively contribute to the development of the state,” she stated.
The event, which took place in the state capital, brought together representatives from several key institutions, including the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and the Ekiti State Primary Healthcare Development Agency.
Mrs Akomolafe underscored the importance of grassroots mobilisation in the agency’s strategy, highlighting the role of community orientation officers in sensitising the populace. She further urged residents to maintain high standards of personal and environmental hygiene, describing them as vital to public health.
“Female genital mutilation is a harmful and inhumane practice that constitutes a gross violation of human rights. It must be unequivocally rejected due to its grave physical and psychological consequences,” she warned.
She concluded by calling on citizens to desist from all forms of rights abuse and prioritise cleanliness for the collective well-being of society.
