The Isiokpo branch of the Nigerian Bar Association has instituted an action charging two suspects, Chima Wornu (aged 34 years) and Favour Abraham (aged 27 years), before the Isiokpo magistrate district of the Magistrate court of Rivers State, Nigeria.

The suspects were arraigned today, the 4th of January, 2022, for allegedly forging the stamp and seals of lawyer (s). This was confirmed in a charge sheet marked as Charge No. IMC/IC/2022.

According to the counts on the charge sheet sighted by ACER, the Defendant were said to have conspired amongst themselves to commit felony to wit: forgery, and that they did commit an offence punishable under Section 516 (1) of the Criminal Code Laws of Rivers State; that the suspect did also forge a deed of conveyance, stamp with lawyer's seal, purporting to be original document and thereby committed and offence under Section 467 (B) of the same law. All offences were alleged to have been committed on the 30th day of December, 2021 at Omagwa station.

Both suspects who were arraigned, pleaded not guilty to the charges read against them. The matter was thus adjourned to the 13th day of January, 2022 for consideration of bail. However, the suspects were remanded in the Ahoada Correctional Center, on an order of the presiding Magistrate.

The branch became seised of this infraction on the lawyers' constitutional rights as same was uncovered when a senior member of the branch, Dr.  Cashmia Ofurum stumbled on the suspects at a business centre at Omagwa in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers, where  he had gone to access the outfit's internet facility.

Dr. Ofurum immediately called to inform some members of the branch, including the branch Chairman, Promise Ichegbo, Esq. who responded promptly and directed the arrest of the suspects and followed them to Isiokpo divisional police station and subsequently arraigned them today Tuesday 4th January,  2022, at the  Isiokpo magistrate court presided over by a Chief Magistrate, his worship Lawrence Ishikaku.

The branch Chairman, Promise Ichegbo, who held a watching brief on behalf of the NBA during the proceedings,  speaking as an Amicus, since he could not be heard, not possessing fiat of the Attorney - General to prosecute the charge, urged the court to do justice to members of the profession whose statutory rights and intellectual property are invaded and usurped by those miscreants and fraudsters, as well as the society at large, and to discourage the Defendants from continuing in their criminal activities in order to serve as deterrent to them, and other members of the society, including surveyors who are complicit in this heinous criminal acts.
