The Island Prize for a debut novel from Africa is a writing competition organized by Holland House Books (UK), Karavan Press (SA), and Karen Jennings to give writers from the continent of Africa (or the diaspora) a chance to showcase their works to a wider audience, with the possibility of mentoring, feedback, meeting a potential agent and publication (both in the UK and South Africa).


The competition requires no entry fee, and writers from all parts of Africa who have not had a novel publish r are invited to enter. Prizes for the first, second and third positions are; £500 for 1st prize, £300 for second prize and £200 for third prize.


All three will be read by publishers and agents, and considered for publication by Holland House Books in the UK. All short listed novels will receive feedback.


The Island Prize is open to African writers aged 18 and over regardless of their place of residence. 


All participants must be writers born in or having citizenship of any African Country. A one-page summary and the first 3 chapters (or 10,000 words) of a complete debut novel should be submitted. Submissions are open from Wednesday 15 September, 2021 and closes at midnight central African time on Sunday 12 December, 2021.
