Rights Group Calls on IGP to Address Police Abuses

Meanwhile, the Centre for Human and Socio-Economic Rights (CHSR) has urged the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to intervene in what it described as disturbing cases of violence, conspiracy, and abuse of authority involving police officers.

The organisation warned that failure to act swiftly could escalate into bloodshed and further erode public trust in law enforcement.

At a press briefing on Tuesday, CHSR President, Alex Omotehinse, cited the case of one Mr. Kolawale Oluakamo, who alleged a series of threats, attempted murder, conspiracy, malicious damage, and intimidation linked to a land dispute in Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos State.

According to Oluakamo, the matter concerns four plots of land at Ijagemo Road, Tailor Bus Stop, valued at over ₦40 million. He claimed that the property lawfully belongs to his elder sister, who resides abroad, and that he has managed it for over a decade with valid survey documents and receipts.

He recounted how, on 2 February 2025, a serving police officer threatened his life, and how armed men stormed the land on 16 April 2025, causing damage in an attempt to forcibly seize it. On 23 September 2025, he was allegedly attacked, beaten, and warned to stay away from the property.

Omotehinse emphasised that the case transcends a mere land dispute, calling it a direct assault on life, human rights, and the rule of law. He warned that continued threats, shootings, beatings, and intimidation could spiral into violence and possible loss of lives in Lagos.

The CHSR, therefore, called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of Zone 2, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, and the Police Service Commission to take urgent and decisive action on the matter.
