Airtel Africa is making a bold move into the future of technology by building a massive 38-megawatt data centre in Eko Atlantic, Lagos. The project, called Nxtra by Airtel, is designed to support artificial intelligence (AI) at scale, with a setup that can handle as much as 6 kilowatts per rack. This makes it one of the most advanced facilities in West Africa, setting a new standard for digital infrastructure in the region.

The company has hired top global experts, including former Amazon Web Services leaders, to make sure the project is world-class. Airtel is not stopping in Lagos alone; the plan is to expand with five mega data centres across Africa, creating a network that can support the growing demand for cloud computing, AI, and digital services.

For West Africa’s tech economy, this is a major step forward. The Lagos data centre will give startups, banks, and big businesses faster, safer, and more reliable access to digital services without needing to rely on facilities in Europe or America. This means reduced costs, quicker connections, and more opportunities for innovation.

In the long run, projects like this could completely change the digital landscape of Africa. By investing in high-quality infrastructure, Airtel is not only making Nigeria a hub for AI and cloud technology but also opening doors for Africans to compete in the global digital economy.
